Yohei Iwasaki began his MBA program with the specific goal to start a viable social enterprise in cleantech. He achieved that goal with the launch of mOasis, a company (and namesake product) that enables farmers to grow more crops from less water and to cultivate previously underutilized land. Along the way, Yohei won the North Bridge business plan competition, was a finalist in the ImagineH20 competition, earned second place in Stanford’s 2010 Social E-Challenge, earned second place in Stanford’s 2011 E-Challenge, and was funded by one of Silicon Valley’s most legendary venture capitalists.
During his time at Stanford GSB, Yohei participated in Service Learning Trips to South Africa, China and California, where he witnessed first-hand how demand for water has exceeded the current supply. He noted how farmers, their communities, and economies both at home and abroad are suffering as a result. In response, Yohei turned to faculty, classmates, experts and advisors to develop an innovative solution -- mOasis.
mOasis is a water storage material that, when placed in soil, stores 400 times its weight in water, irrigating gradually and precisely over the growing season. Water consumption is significantly reduced, and evaporation, drainage, and run-off are prevented. By harnessing the water in this fashion, mOasis helps crops survive their germination phase and flourish in an otherwise unfriendly environment.
