How do you contribute?
medicine -- went to medical school in my 40's with 3 kids, family physician and eating disorders specialist, board member at el camino hospital
education -- many roles; latest has been leading the parent volunteer group provide STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Week at Los Altos High School. (see website for details: http://sharepoint.mvla.net/lahs/Pages/default.aspx
What are important lessons you learned?
i'm all about the patients and i'm all about connecting people, often in seemingly unconnected areas. i'm also a big believer (and have walked the talk) in following one's dream/passion. as i went to medical school quite out of order in the usual scheme of things (high tech background and mba first), i seem to have a fairly unique view of the medical world. medical care is colliding with technology and the business of medicine and i happen to have have a front row seat. it's an incredible time to be involved with both -- and by being in the heartland of innovation here in the valley and being on the board of "the hospital of silicon valley", the possibilities are really amazing. also, my involvement in science/math education in the public school, k-12 arena, brings forth yet another dimension -- insuring sufficient knowledge in these important and often "uncool" areas of study to insure continuing breakthroughs and innovation important to the world and u.s. competitiveness in the adults of tomorrow.
both with regard to united states competitiveness at a global level in this area as well as as the kids of today and their becoming the adults/leaders of tomorrow.
What are your favorite social innovation resources?
cross pollination across causes, in my case education and healthcare.
